Everything You Need to Know About Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP)

An Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) is a system which recycles heat from outside to either heat or cool your property. This heat can then be used to heat your home through radiators, underfloor heating systems, and hot water. An ASHP is usually located outdoors, extracting air before heating it using the system’s pumping mechanism. While the pump needs electricity to run, it ultimately produces more heat than it does electrical energy. There are two main types of ASHP.

The first is Air-to-Water Heat Pump, which takes heat from the outside air and feeds it into your wet central heating system. The second is an Air-to-Air Heat Pumps, which also takes heat from the outside air, before feeding it into your home through fans. However, it must be noted that this type of system cannot produce hot water. Some benefits of air source heat pumps:

  • Air source heat pumps are a great alternative to heating your home efficiently; you can generate your own heat which will save you money on your energy bills.
  • You could potentially make additional income through the UK government’s Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI)
  • Lower carbon emissions and carbon footprint from your home
  • Can heat your entire home including your water
  • Minimal maintenance required
