Electricians Come Out on Top, Thanks to Daily Mirror Survey

Electricians Come Out on Top, Thanks to Daily Mirror Survey

Who would make your perfect neighbour? In terms of preferred profession, most people would rather have an electrician, a plumber or a doctor living next door. The news comes after the results of a recent survey of 2,000 adults were revealed in the UK’s The Mirror newspaper.

According to the report, electricians come higher than politicians or footballers when it comes to the kind of neighbour most British residents hope for. Why? It was reported that skilled workers were the most valuable neighbours, rather than professionals like lawyers or musicians.

And while our team here at JLM Electrical might not live next door to you, we’re certainly never far away; we can be there in a flash at your home or business – wherever you are, up or down the country – if you’re in need of expert help or advice.

The study, conducted by education charity Edge Foundation, said many people often call on a neighbour for practical help. This includes anything from assistance with a boiler, to a spare pair of hands if a car breaks down. Towards the top of the list in the 10 most valued professions were electricians (of course!), builders and mechanics, doctors and plumbers. Politicians, psychologists and actors, meanwhile, were found nearer the bottom of the list.

In the piece, Dave Harbourne, acting chief executive of the Edge Foundation, said: “Over a third of us cite helpfulness as the most important quality in our neighbours. “Whilst ‘everybody needs good neighbours’ still rings true, our research shows that it is the technical, practical and vocational skills that really add value to communities.”

And it’s hardly surprising people like to know their neighbours might come in handy, eh?

Published to mark VQ Day, the report – whose findings were featured on The Mirror site just a few days ago – highlights vocational qualifications.
